Al selling Social Selling Takes Woman From Market Stall To £4 Million Headquarters By Francois Muscat

Instead of giving LinkedIn and social selling tips, I wanted to write about a huge social selling success story from London. Susie Ma started selling her own brand of body lotion when she was still at school. She told Forbes that she made as much as £1,000 per week and hoped that she would help be able to pay for her education or help her mother buy a house.


Fast-forward to 2019, and Susie is moving her company, Tropic Skincare, into a new head office that costs £4-million. Her company announced record sales of £29.5-million. How did the maker of organic, sustainably sourced body products compete with the big brands that are dominating the market?


Susie did a short stint on the UK version of The Apprentice and the entrepreneur lynchpin of the show, Sir Alan Sugar, invested £250,000 for half the business. He also provided mentoring and support. The day-to-day running of the business and its ultimate success, however, was up to Susie.


Susie chose social selling as her sales model of choice. Her strategy, which was backed up by an e-commerce website, was to recruit “ambassadors” to sell the products for her at events and through product demonstrations. The ambassadors were armed with a £180 starter kit that contained £400 worth of products and they were sent out to make a return for themselves. Ambassadors receive 25% commission for their sales.


Without social media and social selling, it would have been impossible to reach the number of people that this entrepreneur had to reach to take her business from a market stall at Greenwich Village to a £4-million head office.
