Your future customers and business partners are at your fingertips

By Rob Thomas

People still mistakenly believe that social media is used to stay updated with friends’ activities, family holiday photos and personal connections. Many people, however, are connecting with potential business investors, future colleagues and employees and their next big clients on these sites. With social media, these people are all within reach but it remains your responsibility to reach out and create the relationships that will last.

Did you know that close to 25% of time spent online is spent on social media activities and that three quarters of everyone online use social media in some form of the other? Whether you are interested in attracting talent, securing start-up capital for a new venture or you want to establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry, then social selling is the way to go about it. Here are some basics to get you started:

Research your prospects

People have become very open online. Start by doing your research and looking for a prospect’s LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter profiles to see what type of information they share and reveal about themselves. This is the starting point of the process so that you can determine who it would make sense to connect with online.

Be real

Don’t take on a voice or brand that you don’t portray in real life meetings. If you’re a cheerful, happy-go-lucky type of sales person, make sure this personality is reflected in your online brand. It’s easy to make friends and form connections when you’re being yourself.

Deepen your relationships

Getting a Like or a follow back is great, but make sure you’re nurturing relationships by giving timely feedback, engaging with your online social circles and sharing relevant information.
