The Future of Facebook in Social Selling

Originally designed to keep university students in contact with one another, Facebook has come a long way since it was started in 2004. This social media platform has become the hallmark of social networking. While trends come and go, Facebook is here to stay. And after all this time, it is still a powerful tool for social selling.

Page Not Personal Profile

First of all, using your personal profile as a business Page goes against the terms of use of Facebook.

But more than just being legal, representing your brand with a Facebook Page which your fans can like and follow maximises its business potential for you because your updates will be visible to them in their news feeds.

To make it easier to remember, search for and find your organization’s Page, use the page info section to create an @username. Rules from Facebook regarding usernames:

  • “You can only have one username for your Page or profile and you can’t claim a username that someone else is already using.
  • Your username must adhere to the Facebook Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
  • You may not immediately be able to create a username for your Page, and your Page’s username may be removed because of inactivity.”

Add Images

There are two main images which will help your target audience recognize and engage with you:

  1. The cover photo, and
  2. The profile picture.

Being public, these images have the potential to be seen by an average of 1.71 billion monthly active users and 1.13 billion daily active users (and a 16% increase year-on-year; and a record 77% ownership of all social logins.)

With 1.57 billion monthly active users and 1.03 million daily active users being mobile, be aware of the way these images appear on different devices before you start. The large landscape-orientation cover photo is the ideal place to grab the attention of visitors and tempt them to explore further. Check that “your cover photo follows the Pages terms. Cover photos cannot be deceptive, misleading or infringe on anyone’s copyright.”

A thumbnail image of your square profile picture is displayed next to all your updates and comments, so make sure it is instantly recognizable – for example use your logo or a headshot of you.
