What You Need to Know about Social Selling and Monitoring Your Competitors on Twitter

By Francois Muscat

Just like any other marketing and sales technique, keeping a close eye on your competitors and their strategies is imperative when it comes to social media marketing. The question is, how do you do it on Twitter without them knowing about it? Here are our best tips to keep in mind:

  • Don’t Click ‘Follow’

While it may be more convenient for your competitors’ activity to come straight through to your Twitter feed, following them will make what you are trying to do extremely obvious indeed. Luckily, there is an easy way around this. Seeing as though everything business-wise on Twitter is public, you can simply visit their Twitter profiles and look around every so often.

  • Use Private Twitter Lists

Private Twitter lists are much more convenient and are handy to use because they also allow you to follow your competitors’ Twitter conversations without them being aware of it. Here’s how you add them to a list:

  1. While online, search for your competitor’s profile in the search bar and open it up.
  2. On the left-hand side of the ‘Follow’ button, there will be a small gear icon. Click on it and choose the ‘Add or remove from lists’ option.
  • Next, click on “Create a list” and name it.

  1. Click on the ‘private’ option at the bottom of the page and save.
  2. Finally, click the box beside your new list so that there is a checkmark in it.

From there, you can visit the rest of your competitors’ profiles and add them to the list. The next time you log in to Twitter, simply select the lists section on your profile, open your list and all your competitors’ recent activity will pop up – and they will remain none the wiser!
