Watch Out for These Social Media Trends in 2018

“The only constant is change.” Greek philosopher, Heraclitus of Ephesus, coined this phrase around 500 BC – imagine what he would think of the frenetically-paced changes of the social media landscape! To increase engagement and build a following around your brand, it is essential to stay abreast of the trends social media offers.

Here are my top trends for 2018:

  1. Get Personal 

As social platforms advance, so their analytics features get more in-depth and detailed – allowing businesses valuable insights. Knowing exactly what the distinct groups within your audience are looking for means the death of generic content. Quality, personalised content can be created and shared for improved engagement and brand loyalty.

  1. Incorporate Augmented Reality 

Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X incorporate an augmented reality chip. While this is aimed at mobile gaming, I am sure that it is only a matter of time till social media platforms also leverage this new technology.

  1. Smart Selection 

With so much overlap across the platforms, knowing exactly who your target market is and determining what their preferred social media platform is will be crucial to your social selling success:

  • Snapchat dominates among members of younger demographics;
  • Instagram Stories is steadily increasing its reach and popularity.
  1. Stream Live 

Live streaming has become a powerful method of grabbing the attention of followers. More and more, live streaming is becoming a mainstream tool in brand content plans.

  1. Watch Twitter 

Twitter has become a bit of the runt in the social media family. LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram have flourished, while Twitter failed to grow followers in 2017. However, that’s not to say it is history. No doubt Twitter is looking at how it can reinvent itself.

  1. Listen Up 

Use web monitoring – mentions and what people are saying about your business and competitors in your industry – to enhance your marketing strategy.

If you haven’t already, design all your social media posts to be “mobile first”. Even Facebook, which unlike newer social media platforms was not initially designed to be mobile, is almost entirely mobile.
